Toyota Yaris
The Toyota Yaris falls into the category of a ‘Supermini’, in other words it is compact, reliable and a bit more spacious than the normal mini. At prices ranging from £9,905 to £14,385 on the road it is aimed at the cost conscious small family whose main priority is getting around in a reliable car without any frills.
The Toyota Yaris is available in two petrol-engined variants, the 69bhp 1.0litre and the 100bhp 1.33litre. The 1.33 litre manages 0 to 60mph in 11.7 seconds with a maximum speed of 109 mph. Fuel consumption is a bonus, as you might expect of a car of this size, achieving 45.6mpg in urban conditions 64.3mpg in non urban and 55.4mpg combined. Diesel options include the 90bhp 1.4litre. Both the 1.33litre and the diesel have a six-speed gearbox. Three and five-door models are available.
All models come with an MP3 compatible CD stereo, audio controls on the steering wheel, rake and reach adjustable steering column, electric front windows, remote central locking, ABS brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, plus twin front and side airbags. Size wise, the Toyota Yaris is smaller than a Ford Fiesta, which makes it easier to park, but can be uncomfortable for a family of four, especially on long journeys. Boot space is limited, but the fold-down rear seat greatly increases capacity, assuming no more than two people are in the car.
The Toyota Yaris is reliable and economical to run, but does not make for a thrilling drive, especially on long journeys.
